Personalizing treatment based on each patient’s lifestyle goals is where Dr. Denny Battista’s dedication lies. He developed an interest in the specialty field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative Medicine while in medical school, Dr. Battista excels in treating Spinal issues involving the Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar spine, headaches/ migraines, peripheral joint pain, nerve & muscle pain and any other condition which may cause a physical impairment.
A Path Into Healthcare
Dr. Battista attended St. Bonaventure University and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor degree in Biology. Afterwards, he attended medical school at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and was awarded a one-year fellowship in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. Dr. Battista is board certified in both Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine.
Importance of Patient Rapport
When not at work, Dr. Battista spends most of his time enjoying his family. During the summer, it is all about the sunshine, enjoying the pool and preparing awesome meals to savor with company. Otherwise, he enjoys vacationing with his family, visiting his son and daughter at college, and weekend trips with his wife. As a physician, he prioritizes getting to know his patients because it allows them to develop a comfort level and to open up. When they share their experiences with their family and about their activities, it helps him figure out their functional limitations.
Dr. Battista also states that he’s “always believed that rapport with my patients is key to understanding their limitations and goals.” He feels as though this increases their trust in him which allows him to better tailor their treatment.
Why Pain Management? Family Experience Impacts Profession
Prior to adding the specialty of Pain Management, Dr. Battista first became board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). His grandmother was his inspiration to enter this field. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis back in 1979 and she unfortunately suffered all the typical medical issues associated with this disease. At that time, the physicians who were caring for her did not have the answers. Her pain, weakness and muscle spasms led to ambulation deficiencies, This eventually led to pressure sores, ulcers and amputations.
It wasn’t until Dr. Battista was in medical school where he became familiar with the specialty of PM&R. He realized that this was whom his grandmother should have seen. Unfortunately, she had already passed away from the progression of her illness. While practicing as a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitative physician, Dr. Battista realized the importance in managing a patient’s pain level in order to achieve functional improvement. From here, he proceeded to fulfill the necessary training to become board certified in Pain Management. With this, he developed an entire new skill set which allowed him to control pain and expedite pain free function.
Clarifying Misunderstandings: When to See a Pain Management Physician
It is very common for new patients to have misconceptions about pain management. Many patients who seek treatment at CNY Spine and Pain Medicine assume that medication is always needed and that they will receive one quick comprehensive treatment. It is assumed that the pain will magically be gone. After Dr. Battista determines what he thinks the source of pain is, he explains the pathology in understandable terms for his patients. He then proceeds to discuss different treatment options starting with conservative to more invasive options. Most of the time a combination of treatments is required. Sometimes a total resolution of their symptoms is not possible. Every patient is unique, meaning outcomes for everyone are different. However,
consulting with a pain management physician, especially before surgery, may be the first step to a more comfortable and functional life.
Guidance for New Patients
Dr. Battista would advise new patients to present a detailed history and to physically bring any imaging and information about prior treatments to their first visit. He would encourage patients to arrive open-minded about all treatment options and to ask questions. On most occasions, patients should seek advice from a pain management physician, prior to any surgical recommendations.
