“I wanted the skills to make someone’s discomfort ‘go away,” Dr. Manasala explains.
With interest in Musculoskeletal Conditions and Pain Management Conditions, Dr. Manansala excels in treating headaches/ migraines, neck & back, joints, and nerve & muscle pain at CNY Spine and Pain Medicine, LLC.
A Gateway to Healthcare
Inspired by his late grandfather, Dr. Manansala completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at SUNY Upstate Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Interventional Pain Management at SUNY Upstate Hospital. He specializes in treating musculoskeletal and pain management conditions through a wide array of approaches including modalities, medications, as well as ultrasound and fluoroscopy guided procedures.
Personal Life and Approach to Care
Dr. Manansala focuses on a relationship-centered approach when caring for his patients. When in the office, he discusses outside interests with his patients, such as his love for his family, friends, football, golf, and chess. He states that he has “a great relationship with most of his patients” and this rapport goes beyond pain, helping patients open up and foster trust, creating a strong doctor-patient relationship. With his interests, like golf for example, it is a sport of patience- an important quality when caring for patients in the office. Chess also enhances strategic thinking, causing one to anticipate challenges which reflect actions in the office such as considering treatment options. Dr. Manansala’s hobbies embrace the importance of teamwork, empathy, and balance- factors that are essential in healthcare.
Inspiration and Fulfillment in Pain Management
When choosing a profession, Dr. Manansala was inspired to develop “the skills to be able to make someone’s discomfort ‘go away.’” Pain can be all-consuming; affecting every aspect of a person’s daily life. He describes pain as a “weird condition where when you have it, it is all you think about, but when it’s gone you can sometimes barely remember it.” Dr. Manansala’s goal for his patients is for them to return to the activities and joys they may have forgotten. He finds it incredibly rewarding witnessing his patients transition to a happier and healthier life. He believes that pain management is not just about alleviating discomfort, but about restoring function and improving quality of life.
Addressing Pain Management Misconceptions
A common misconception regarding pain management is that it solely focuses on prescribing medications to alleviate pain. While medication can be an important component of treatment, CNY Spine and Pain like to view pain management as the “primary care for the musculoskeletal system.” The physicians address musculoskeletal pain comprehensively, treating conditions from head to toe, including neck, shoulder, hip, back, knee, ankle, and even migraines.
