By targeting the space within a joint, where two bones meet, a joint injection can provide relief from conditions like arthritis and joint inflammation. A bursa injection focuses on the bursa, the small sac filled with fluid that cushions the bones, tendons, and muscles near a joint. Injections can be effective in treating conditions like bursitis, or inflammation of the bursa.
A tendon injection is directed towards the fibrous tissues that attach muscles to bones, helping to alleviate pain and inflammation caused by tendonitis or other tendon-related conditions.
Joint, bursa or tendon injection treatments are a relatively safe and low-risk procedure. However, some people may experience certain side effects and/or complications from this treatment. These can include pain or discomfort at the injection site, infection, bleeding, or weakening of the tendons over time with repeated injections.
Joint, bursa, and tendon injections are often a relatively quick treatment. You will be positioned comfortably, and the area for the injection will be cleaned thoroughly to reduce the risk of infection.
Your care team may apply a local anesthetic to numb the area and ensure minimal discomfort during the injection. With a thin needle, your care team will carefully administer the medication into the targeted joint, bursa, or tendon. In some cases, guidance from imaging techniques like ultrasound or a real-time X-ray called fluoroscopy may be used to ensure precise placement of the injection.
After the injection, you will be monitored for a short period and then allowed to return home.
