• Benefits

The benefits of spinal cord stimulation are profound for people living with chronic pain conditions that have not responded well to other treatments. SCS offers a non-invasive and drug-free approach to pain management.

By delivering controlled electrical impulses to the spinal cord, SCS can effectively alleviate or even eliminate pain in various areas of the body, improving overall quality of life. This therapy allows for personalized pain relief, as the stimulation parameters can be adjusted to suit individual preferences and pain patterns. SCS can help you regain functionality, engage in physical therapy, and participate in activities you may have previously avoided due to pain, ultimately restoring a sense of normalcy and well-being.

  • Risks

The risks associated with SCS include potential complications from the surgical implantation procedure, such as infection, bleeding, or a malfunction of the device itself. Some patients may experience discomfort or unwanted side effects, like tingling sensations or muscle contractions at the stimulation site, which may require adjustments to the settings or, in rare cases, device removal.

  • What to Expect During

SCS is a two-stage procedure. The first stage is the trial stage and does not involve any surgery. Through a specialized needle, one or two wires are placed in the epidural space. These wires are attached to an external generator which you control. The wires may be left in place for up to 5-7 days. During this phase, you will engage in relatively normal activity and gauge the effectiveness of the device.

If it is successful and you are satisfied by the degree of pain relief, the second stage involves referring you to a spine surgeon who will place the permanent device and wires under your skin. Each procedure can take up to 1-2 hours.
